Rancho Mirage, CA - TifEagle, the new bermudagrass for golf course greens, is the choice for Mission Hills Country Club on the Pete Dye Challenge course.
Starting in July, West Coast Turf will strip out the existing bentgrass greens, and replace them with 120,000 square feet of TifEagle bermudagrass sod. Mission Hills Country Club will have the first 18 holes of TifEagle bermudagrass sod in the nation.
"Our bentgrass was not holding up with the amount of play," explained David Johnson, Director of Golf Course Maintenance at Mission Hills. "It cannot handle the traffic and has problems in high humidity. We had West Coast Turf switch out the greens on out Arnold Palmer Course last summer from bent to "old-line" Tifdwarf, and have been extremely happy with the results. So we made the decision to go with bermuda on the Pete Dye course, too. We researched all of our bentgrass options, and decided to go with TifEagle."
I chose TifEagle because of its finer knit. It allows for matting. The greens on this course are small and undulating, and I feel the TifEagle will give the ball a better hold. And, with TifEagle I can keep my greens very tight, which pleases my members," said Johnson.
TifEagle was bred, evaluated, developed and released by Dr. Wayne Hanna at the Coastal Plain Experimental Station in Tifton, GA-the same breeders as Tifgreen, Tifway, and Tifdwarf. TifEagle was evaluated on over 25 golf course environments from North Carolina to California from 1993 to 1997. The data collected from these sites show that TifEagle is capable of producing a premium quality putting surface meeting the highest golfing standards.
TifEagle is grown in California, Arizona, and Nevada exclusively by West Coast Turf. |
